چکیده

Formal and substantial analogies between the Boltzmann equation of classical statistical physics and the Dirac equation for relativistic quantum mechanics are discussed, with special emphasis on the Majorana representation of the Dirac equation, in which all matrices are real. It is shown that this property is instrumental in turning the Boltzmann-Dirac analogy into an efficient computational method for quantum problems, the so-called quantum lattice Boltzmann (QLB) method. Selected applications of the QLB method to Anderson localization in Bose-Einstein condensates and electron transport in graphene are presented and commented on. Finally, future prospects of QLB applications for quantum computing and the simulation of quantum field theories, are briefly mentioned. c © Electronic Journal of Theoretical Physics. Formal analogy between the Dirac equation in its Majorana form and the discrete-velocity version of the Boltzmann kinetic equation.

We point out a formal analogy between the Dirac equation in Majorana form and the discrete-velocity version of the Boltzmann kinetic equation. By a systematic analysis based on the theory of operator splitting, this analogy is shown to turn into a concrete and efficient computational method, providing a unified treatment of relativistic and nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. This might have pot...

Majorana returns

Enrico Fermi had to cajole his friend Ettore Majorana into publishing his big idea: a modification of the Dirac equation that would have profound ramifications for particle physics. Shortly afterwards, in 1938, Majorana mysteriously disappeared, and for 70 years his modified equation remained a rather obscure footnote in theoretical physics (Box 1). Now suddenly, it seems, Majorana’s concept is...

See-saw Mechanisms for Dirac and Majorana Neutrino Masses

(Dated: April 9, 2008) We investigate the see-saw mechanism for generally non-fine-tuned n × n mass matrices involving both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. We specifically show that the number of naturally light neutrinos cannot exceed half of the dimension of the considered mass matrix. Furthermore, we determine a criterion for mass matrix textures leading to light Dirac neutrinos with the see-s...

That a Majorana neutrino theory is different from a Dirac neutrino theory (even in the zero mass limit) is proved in two sentences. Fermion Statistics For the reactions (Dirac) e + e − → ν ¯ ν and (Majorana) e + e − → νν wherein the two final particles are presumed to have opposite helicity, in the Dirac case the neutrino and anti-neutrino are different particles so that Ψ Dirac (p 1 , λ 1 ; ¯ ...
